The charity, Smalls for All, was suggested by our Editor, Vicky who had spotted a post in the Harley Ladies UK Facebook Group Hilary Byrne had posted into the Facebook group asking for donations and we realised the charity themselves weren’t a million miles away from the Dunedin Chapter!
We asked Dunedin Chapter members if they would like to help and were amazed at the response. We collected donations during two of our chapter meetings. One of our chapter members Paul Nickels provided a huge boost to our collection by getting his employers involved too. Having collected 5 large bags of lightly used bras and new pants we arranged to meet Maria Macnamara, Founder & CEO, at their warehouse in Livingston to hand over our donation.
Maria and her volunteers kindly showed chapter members Alex Adams, Margaret Drysdale and myself around and explained what they do. The charity collects and distributes underwear for women and children in Africa. New pants and socks for boys and girls, as well as lightly worn bras for women and girls. The press promoted the bra collection and that is what they now mainly receive but they still require new pants and socks.
You may be wondering why they collect ‘smalls for all’ but while we take underwear for granted and it may seem a small thing, it can make a life-changing difference. For example, having pants can help teenage girls complete their education without having to miss school each month during their period.
It’s run by Maria and a few volunteers but is a well-run facility.
We were delighted to be able to make a small contribution to this worthy cause and understand that following Hilary’s Ladies of Harley post, 5 Chapters have made donations!
