Membership

Q       When does my Chapter membership expire?

A All Chapter memberships expire on 31st January of each year.

Q       My friend is interested in joining Dunedin Chapter but would like to come along first to see what it’s all about. Is that OK?

A       Absolutely! Guests are very welcome to attend two Chapter meetings before deciding if they would like to join us. It's a good idea to come along and chat with other members and listen to what's been happening in the Chapter and what's planned for the months ahead.

Q       Can guests come to the Annual General Meeting?

A       No, only members can attend the Annual General Meeting

Q       Does my partner/other family member need to have a Harley Owners Group® membership as they are not a rider?

A       Yes, we are a HOG® Chapter and HOG® require that all Chapter members must have a current HOG® membership.  This can be an Associate HOG® membership linked to a full HOG® membership.  You can contact HOG® Customer Services on 00800 1111 2223. You will be asked for your HOG® membership number to set up an Associate membership as this is linked to a full membership.

Events

Q       Why do I have to register for events?

A We ask that you register for events so that we know how many members are likely to turn up. We use this information to decide on the size of the venue and any catering required.

Once you have registered, we can contact you to let you know if we had to change any details of the event or cancel the event or ride.

Q       Why do I need to register to attend a ride?

A It helps us to choose places where we plan to stop for refreshments, but more importantly, it lets us know if there is enough Road Crew allocated to the ride. We will have to split a ride because if there are large numbers)

Ride-Outs

Q       What is a Chapter organised ride?

A       All organised Chapter rides are manned by our Road Crew, organised and run in accordance with HOG® guidelines.  There will be a minimum of a lead rider and a sweeper (last man) who will ride at the back of the group, in larger groups there may be more road crew involved.  The lead rider will have checked the route before the ride-out to ensure that it is safe.  When riding with the group you should listen to their pre-ride instructions and follow their instructions during the ride.

Q        I am new to group riding with the Chapter, what do I need to know?

Group riding is a great experience we want you to enjoy it and ensure your safety and the safety of others in the group.  Before you attend a group ride please ensure that you read our Group Riding Guidelines so you are familiar with the rules of riding with the Chapter.

Q        What is riding in Staggered Formation?

It is important to maintain a safe distance between you and the riders around you, we use the staggered riding formation (one nearside – one offside) wherever possible to allow the group to remain tight but gives enough room for manoeuvres where necessary. Details of this is available in our . Group Riding Guidelines

What is “Second Man Drop Off”?

The Chapter uses the “Second Man Drop Off” system for all group rides it is a method of marking the route so that everyone in the group know which exit to take when the group gets split across junctions/traffic lights.  At every junction where the exit is to the right or left the lead rider will allocate (drop off) a rider to mark the junction.  The rider then re-joins the ride in front of the back marker.
For many rides, the road crew will carry out this role but if you are riding in a group please be prepared to mark a junction when required. Full details of this system are available in our Group Riding Guidelines.

Q.      Can I bring a pillion on a Chapter ride out although he/she isn't a Chapter member?

A.       Yes you can. We only ask that as the rider, you make the Lead Road Captain aware there is a guest with you. Your guest will be asked to sign a disclaimer form prior to the start of the ride.

Q       How do I become a member of the Chapter’s Road Crew?

A       If you are interested in become a member of our Road Crew please speak to our Head Road Captain who will provide you with information.
To ensure that we have safe Chapter group rides, it is essential that we have a well-trained, experienced road crew.  We hold annual training events for riders who wish to become road marshals and once they have experience in that role they can attend a HOG course to become a Road Captain.
We welcome all enquiries to join our Road Crew and we have a Chapter Procedure to explain the process.

Q       Why do I need to register to attend a ride?

A       We need you to register so that we know how many people are likely to turn up, it helps us to advise places where we plan to stop for refreshments, but more importantly it lets us know if there is enough Road Crew allocated to the ride.

Has there been any changes due to Covid-19 restrictions?

A       Yes, we are following Government guidelines and ride-out attendance numbers will be restricted to comply with the latest restrictions on group meetings, because of this you must register for the ride.  Please ensure that you comply with social distancing restrictions, wearing face coverings where appropriate, having hand sanitisers, etc. Please remember that you are promoting the Chapter when you are riding together and we should show that we are ensuring our own and others safety by complying with all Government regulations.
